Carbs Carbohydrates perform an important function as an alternative energy source.

The carb-load is delivered by lentils and peas, which also contain some protein. Beet pulp (what’s left over once sugar is extracted from sugar beets) and chicory root inulin (derived from a plant in the dandelion family) are sources of prebiotic fibre that will help your pet maintain a healthy gut. These are the ‘natural prebiotics’ listed among the pack’s key benefits. In the Ivory Coat pack The right mix of carbs, fat and protein in your pet’s diet can help with something called the ‘protein sparing effect’. This is where energy is derived from carbs or fat so that protein can be left to perform other crucial functions. Complex carbs like dietary fibre are the digestive system’s cleaners. Prebiotic fibre like inulin (from certain plant roots) and chicory root also support gut health by feeding the good bacteria in the gut.

In the Salmon & Ocean Fish kibble,

a superfood blend of fruits and vegetables supplies antioxidants that preserve freshness and boost pet health. Some owners find that their pets thrive on a grain-free diet. There is, however, no strong evidence that grain-free products are better than wholegrain alternatives. Both provide complete nutritional value, just from different sources (vegetables in the first case and grains in the second). The question of wholegrain or grain-free is largely a matter of pet and owner preference.

The other ingredients

Superfoods are any foods that have health promoting properties. This might mean a high quantity of desirable nutrients, or links to disease prevention. The carrots and pumpkins used here are high in beta carotene, an antioxidant that has been associated with improving eye health, warding off disease and slowing cognitive decline. Antioxidants prevent oxidisation to naturally extend the shelf life of products, without the need for preservatives.

Vitamins, minerals, salt, potassium chloride and choline chloride are all additional sources of nutrition that are required to meet that ‘complete and balanced’ standard. These ingredients work in unison to keep your pet’s body functioning by supporting growth, boosting the immune system, and helping cells and organs.
