6 9% OF

AUSTRALIANS OWNA PET

The results are in. Australians are a nation of pet lovers. Well, 69% of us are, to be precise, and the younger you are, the more likely you are to own a pet. Research by Animal Medicines Australia and the Melbourne Institute’s HILDA Survey gives a countrywide snapshot of pet ownership and what it says about us – and our wellbeing. “Pet owners reported that the emotional and social benefits gained from their companions more than outweighed any challenges they experienced,” the Animal Medicines Australia research stated. The dominant predictors of pet owners include owning a separate house (with a mortgage) rather than an apartment or unit, being in a couple with dependent children, and living in NSW, Victoria or Queensland. People living in major urban areas and people renting are less likely to own pets. So what does the survey tell us about our love of our animals?
